It has been suggested that coffee was first introduced to the New Guinea side of the island by the German administration in the then colony of New Guinea in the late 1800's. Colonial administrative records suggest that it was grown in German New Guinea at Ralum in the Kokopo district of East New Britain Province (ENBP) by “Queen Emma” - Emma (Coe) Forsayth with the aid of botanist Richard Parkinson. In Papua, a possible date of 1885 has been given for the introduction of Arabica coffee by catholic missionaries on Yule Island and in the Tapini area.

Other dates have been suggested so a visit to -- http://www.cic.org.pg/index.php/coffeeinpng01/history-of-coffee-in-png  -- may be worthwhile if you are keen on researching the history of coffee.
