The School That Fell From The Sky is a book about a US WWII Pilot called Fred Hargesheimer

During the second wolrd war he was was lost and alone behind enemy lines after one of the engines on his Lockheed Lightning P-38 was shot by the enemy causing him to have to eject from his aircraft.  Many years after the war and on a visit to where he was rescued by villagers in PNG he learned of a need for a school.  He went home and over several years raised enough money to build one.

The U.S. military awarded Hargesheimer a Purple Heart, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Perhaps more meaningful the people Nakanai, where he was shot down, declared him "Suara Auru" -- their "Chief Warrior". In 2006, Nakanai tribesmen carried Hargesheimer to something newly found in the jungle: the wreckage of his Lockheed P-38. It was his last visit to the island. Hargesheimer died on the 23rd of December 2010 at the age of 94.
