Air Niugini commenced operations on the 1st of November 1973 when the first Fokker F27 Friendship lifted off from Jacksons Airport on a flight to Lae, Rabaul and Kieta.  I believe this flight was designated PX100.

In its first year Air Niugini carried 350,000 passengers (85,000 more than forecast) and flew more than 27,000 hours.

Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, then Chief Minister of the Territories, cut the ribbon.
