Harold Cottee, who died at the age of 80 in 2006, is credited as founding the passionfruit industry in Papua New Guinea.  He was instrumental in building the Cottees group in Australia to the point where it became a household name.

Due to his experience in the commercialisation of agricultural products and Cottees' passionfruit production in Papua New Guinea, he was appointed in 1973 to the Australian federal government inquiry into co-operatives in the territory.  This was the first of many roles on government inquiries.
