what happened to Ford Tri motor VH-UBI

Thanks to Bruce Hoy who was the first curator of what eventually became known as the Museum's Department of Modern History I can give the following answer --

The Ford Tri-Motor VH-UBI was recovered from Lake Myola on 1 October 1979 by CH-47 Chinook A15-002 from the Royal Australian Air Force's No. 12 Squadron on behalf of Papua New Guinea's National Museum and Art Gallery. The Defence Force Directorate of Technical Services then brought it to the Museum's holding area in Gordon the same day. The wings were recovered the following year on 1 July 1980
